Track History
Wellington speedway has a rich three-venue lineage. The first speedway opened at Kilbirnie on 9 March 1929, featuring riders like Wally Kilminster who later rode for Wembley. Taita Speedway opened Boxing Day 1947 as the second venue. Te Marua became the third home in 1968, built by the Wellington Stock Car Society (formed 1964). The 1973 NZ vs England test matches β featuring world champions Ivan Mauger and Barry Briggs β were a landmark moment. The 50th anniversary was celebrated in 2018. Today described as 'a nationally important venue for stock car racing' and a 'real drivers' track.'
