Track History
Waikaraka Park has a history predating speedway — during World War II, US and Allied Forces used the site and erected a two-tier concrete grandstand that served the venue for decades. The grandstand was demolished in August 2020 after being deemed an earthquake risk, ending 85 years of wartime heritage. Stockcar racing found a permanent home here on 4 December 1967. For decades it was Auckland's stockcar heartland, producing champions like Kevin Free (3x NZ Champion) and Frank Irvine. The venue was transformed in 2025 with an $11 million upgrade — NZ's first new speedway track in nearly 25 years — featuring a purpose-built racing surface, safety wall, modern lighting, pit areas for 130+ racers, and a 3,000-seat grandstand.
