Track History
Sunset Speedway was born in May 1987 when a small group of enthusiasts in the remote Buller district lobbied the local council for land near North Beach. Local contractors Colin and Roy Wishart threw their weight behind the project β the track was originally called 'Wishart Raceway' in their honour. In 1992 the club joined the Speedway Control Board of NZ and became part of the nationwide network. Sunset Speedway holds a unique distinction: it was the first club ever granted Division Two status, a classification created specifically to recognise the challenges of operating in a region with a small population base. In 1997 it became the only Division Two track ever entrusted with a national title event β the South Island Solo Bike Championship. The track's surface utilises cement by-products from the now-closed Holcim Cement Factory, providing excellent drainage and allowing racing even after days of rain β a critical advantage on the notoriously wet West Coast.
