Track History
Stratford Speedway began when a group of young men approached the local A&P Association about racing stockcars inside the show ring oval. The Taranaki Stockcar Club was formed with Max Hopkins as its first President, and the first meeting was held in February 1965 with 19 registered stockcars. The track developed steadily through the 1970s — racing lights were installed in 1974, and the TQ class was introduced the same year. Stratford achieved a significant milestone in the 1999/2000 season by becoming the first NZ speedway to install electronic lap scoring, earning the 'Speedway of the Year' award. The track has an extraordinary record of producing national champions, with 23 NZ championship titles in the premier classes of Stockcars, Saloons, and Modifieds — more than any other track in New Zealand. The track celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2023.
