A Championship Weekend - NZ Speedway
Track History
Ruapuna opened 29 April 1962 as Templeton Speedway, renamed Ruapuna Park Speedway in 1977. Run by the Christchurch Speedway Association (formed 1959, second-oldest speedway club in NZ). It is the successor to the legendary Aranui Speedway (1949-1959) where Ronnie Moore, Barry Briggs, and Ivan Mauger — who between them hold 12 individual world titles — all started their careers. AJ Foyt raced midgets here during the 1960s-70s golden era. The South Island's only true international speedway, it has hosted 17 NZ Solo Championships and World Championship qualifying from 1976.
