Track History
Riverside Speedway was born from a group of speedway enthusiasts who had been racing at the neighbouring Oreti Park motorcycle track in 1975. In 1976 they decided to build a dedicated stock car facility at Sandy Point and formed the Southland Stock Car Drivers Association. Local company AG Hoffmans donated machinery, and with contributions from drivers, family members, and race fans, the track was ready for racing in 1977. The track's name has its own story — local radio station 4ZA ran a competition to name the new venue, with listeners Christine and Barry Palmenter submitting the winning entry 'Riverside Raceway.' Over nearly five decades, Riverside has produced multiple South Island and New Zealand champions. The track claims the title of 'world's southern-most speedway track' — a distinction sometimes also attributed to neighbouring Oreti Park.
