Track History

Palmerston North's speedway is one of the oldest continuously operating speedway venues in New Zealand, having opened on Boxing Day 1930 for motorcycle racing at the Showgrounds (now Central Energy Trust Arena). It was among the first wave of NZ speedway tracks alongside Kilbirnie (Wellington), Western Springs (Auckland), Monica Park (Christchurch), and Dunedin. The venue sits centrally in the city and boasts a 15,000-seat capacity, making it one of the largest speedway facilities in the country. The 434-metre clay and lime track encircles the arena's main field. The track is synonymous with the Palmerston North Panthers superstock team, who have been national champions 8 times with 21 appearances at the Superstock Teams Nationals. The Panthers' all-time leading driver is Peter Rees with 32 starts and 9 individual championship titles. The annual February Superstock Teams Championship is regarded as the single biggest event on the New Zealand speedway calendar.
