Track History

Oreti Park Speedway has one of the most colourful histories in New Zealand motorsport. In the 1960s, enthusiasts Harry Robinson and Brian Mitchell discovered unused land adjacent to a go-kart facility near Teretonga. The track finally opened on 14 April 1974 with Pall Mall sponsorship. The transformative moment came in 1975 when Bill Tinker organised international 'Troupe Meetings,' bringing legends including Ivan Mauger, Barry Briggs, Ronnie Moore, Ole Olsen, and Egon Muller, drawing crowds of up to 7,000 spectators. World Championship qualifying rounds were held in 1976 and 1983. Declining interest saw regular operations cease in March/April 1985. The track lay dormant for 15 years before reopening on 4 March 2000, rising 'phoenix-like from the ashes.' It is now recognised worldwide as the 'World's Southern Most Speedway' and serves as a key venue for the annual Burt Munro Challenge β€” a motorcycle festival celebrating Invercargill's legendary speed record holder Burt Munro.
