Track History
Oceanview Speedway was born from a traffic jam. On 22 May 1971, the British & Irish Lions rugby team flew into Whanganui Airport, creating a massive traffic jam on the airport road. Stuck in the gridlock were Paul Carrick and Roy Eaton — Eaton already a star of the Palmerston North Panthers. The pair hatched the idea of building a stockcar track at Landguard Bluff, right next to the airport, overlooking the Wanganui River and Tasman Sea. Within six months, they had carved a track out of scrub and sandy hillocks, and the first race meeting was held on 29 October 1972. Teams racing quickly became a major attraction. The Wanganui Warriors became a formidable superstock team. The club has produced numerous NZ champions — five NZ Sidecar titles since 1986-87. The 344-metre clay track celebrated its 50th anniversary in the 2022 season.
