A Championship Weekend - NZ Speedway

Track History

Meeanee Speedway traces its roots to 1959, when a TQ group began racing on a track at the Taradale end of Kennedy Road in Napier. Early in 1961, the Napier City Council needed the Kennedy Road land for residential development, forcing the club to find a new home. The Meeanee domain was secured, and the new speedway opened in 1961. The 400-metre track is surfaced with a clay, sand and lime mix. The track earned international significance when it hosted its first Speedway World Championship qualifying round in 1981. It has been the venue for three NZ Solo Championship finals (1976, 1992, 1998). More recently, Asher Rees made history as the first driver to win three consecutive national superstock titles at the venue.
