A Championship Weekend - NZ Speedway
Track History
Greymouth speedway has a remarkable journey across multiple locations spanning nearly 70 years. It began in early 1956 when a TQ demonstration at a local fair sparked interest. The first racing took place at Wingham Park on Boxing Day 1957 with just six cars, using coal slack from nearby mines as the racing surface. The West Coast Stock Car Club formed in 1971 and began racing on the Kumara Straight, before relocating to the current Greenstone Park site in December 1985. Greenstone Park's most distinctive feature is its nickname: 'The Oval in the Ocean.' The Tasman Sea sits directly behind turns 3 and 4, where at times the waves are visibly higher than the track surface. The track has no lights and races exclusively during daytime hours — one of the only speedways in New Zealand to do so. The King of the Coast event, traditionally held the weekend after Easter, draws full fields from across the South Island.
