Track History
Historical ArchiveFerndene Park Speedway was built in 1986 on private farming land owned by Gary Marsh at Upland Road, Egmont Village, under the control of the Taranaki Speedway Association Inc. The track was a quarter-mile dirt oval with a distinctive asymmetric design — high banked corners at one end and flat corners at the opposite end. The company 'Ferndene Park Speedway Limited' was registered on 26 August 1987. The original company was dissolved on 3 February 1993 after the venue became unprofitable. The track was revived around 2008 under CTRA (affiliated with MANZ) rather than Speedway New Zealand, as the track lacked a concrete wall and could only run non-contact classes under SNZ rules — it had steel pipe walls instead. The second era saw CTRA-sanctioned events including the North Island Stockcar Championship and popular 'Ferndene Frenzy' demolition derby events. Financial viability remained a challenge, and in 2012 the track permanently closed — the Taranaki Daily News reported there was 'no option but to close Ferndene.' The land reverted to farming use.
