Track History
Baypark has a two-era history. The original Baypark Raceway opened 3 December 1967, built on swampland. Under promoter Peter Hanna, it operated as an 'outsiders track' that defied conventions, scoring NZ firsts for Formula 5000 and truck racing. It closed in 1995 due to encroaching development. The current purpose-built $24M stadium was built by Bob Clarkson in 2001, sold to Tauranga City Council in 2007. The 451-metre oval is the widest in NZ at 20m in corners, earning the nickname 'the Talladega of NZ Speedway.' The International Midget Series has drawn USAC champions including Cannon McIntosh, Logan Seavey, and Buddy Kofoid.
