A Multi-Million Dollar Bet on the Future of Roaring Engines

While some might see speedway as a relic, a major investment in Auckland is betting big on its future. The recent $11 million upgrade to the city's Waikaraka Park has delivered "New Zealand's first new speedway track in nearly 25 years," securing the sport's home in the country's largest city with a lease in place until at least 2051.

This isn't just a resurfacing project; it's a complete modernization. The facility now boasts a new track designed to international standards to promote "faster, closer racing." New lighting towers produce a broadcast-quality 500lux, and an expanded pit area can now house up to 130 racers at once, a significant increase over the old setup.

The project consolidated Auckland's two separate four-wheel speedway venues, Western Springs and Waikaraka Park, into a single, state-of-the-art hub. This move ensures that all classes, from the contact grades to the high-speed open-wheelers, have a permanent home.
